6) Minimum 60 days gap shall be provided between starting of painting work and completion of plastering work.
7) Moisture content in the wall shall be particularly attended to. When sufficient time is not available for the
surface of walls to dry out, walls shall be applied with lime wash, color wash, cement paint or oil free distemper which will allow drying process to continue at reasonable rate through their films. In any case glossy paint shall not be applied till drying process is complete.
8) No painting work shall be carried out in wet and very humid weather when there is danger of dew or weather is otherwise unfavorable.
Surface Preparation:
1) After ensuring that wall surface is totally dry, it shall be brushed with emery paper (sand paper) to remove dirt, loose dust and efflorescence, if any.
2) If any cracks are observed on wall surface the same shall be cut into a V shaped groove with a round wheel cutter to the depth equal to thickness of crack and the groove shall be filled with POP or Crack seal. It shall then be allowed to dry completely.
3) The entire plastered surface to be painted should be inspected for hollowness / voids, if any, and necessary rectification should be done as per the guidance of QA Department.
During Painting Procedures:
1) Availability of all paints, primer, putty, thinner, glue, whiting powder, linseed oil, turpentine, brushes, rollers etc shall be ensured prior to commencement of painting work.
2) The surfaces which are not to be painted shall be covered with empty cement bags or hessian cloth.
3) Paint to ceilings should be preferably done before paint to walls.
Different Types of Paint and Their Application:
White Wash:
1) Donga (slaked lime) shall be prepared by mixing crushed lime and water and then filtering the solution through cloth.
2) White wash solution shall then be prepared by adding fabric whitener (Indigo powder), glue and salt to Donga thus prepared.
3) 1st coat of white wash solution shall than be applied to walls / ceiling surfaces. Application with brush shall be one stroke downward, one stroke upward and one stroke from left to right.
After application of 1st coat, it shall be allowed to dry and then 2nd coat shall be applied.
5) 3rd coat of white wash shall be applied, if specified in work order or by Architect.
Color Wash:
1) Color wash solution shall be prepared in the same manner as that for white wash with the exception that coloring pigments of required color are added to white wash solution. Indigo powder shall not be added to solution.
2) Application shall be in the same manner as that for white wash.
3) 2 coats of color wash shall be sufficient.
Dry Distemper:
1) Wall surface shall first be cleaned with emery paper (sand paper) after surface preparation.
2) As a general guideline, dry distemper solution shall be prepared by adding 500 ml of water to 1 Kg of packed powder distemper. However it is recommended to follow manufacturer’s instructions with minor variation in quantity of water to obtain paint of desired consistency.
3) 1st coat of dry distemper solution shall then be applied to wall surface. Application with brush shall be one stroke downward, one stroke upward and one stroke from left to right.
4) After application of 1st coat, it shall be allowed to dry and then 2nd coat shall be applied.
5) 3rd coat shall be applied, if specified in work order / by Architect. Thickness of 3rd coat shall be thinner than 1st and 2nd coat.
Oil Bound Distemper (OBD):
1) After Surface Preparation Donga shall be applied on walls.
2) One coat of Primer shall then be applied. (As a general guideline, 300 ml of thinner shall be mixed with 1 lit of Primer).
A layer of putty shall then be applied over entire surface to give a smooth finish. (As a general guideline, putty shall be made by adding 500 ml of Linseed oil to 25 Kg of whiting powder and 1 lit of white oil paint and sufficient quantity of water. Readymade putty can also be used as per the recommendations of the paint manufacturer / Architect.
4) The surface after application of putty shall then be allowed to dry completely.
5) A layer of primer and putty shall again apply as before.
6) After drying of 2nd layer of putty, entire surface shall be cleaned with emery paper (sand paper).
7) 1st coat of OBD shall then be applied. Application with brush shall be one stroke downward, one stroke upward and one stroke from left to right. (As a general guideline, 500 ml of water shall be added to 1 lit of OBD from can).
8) After application of 1st coat of OBD, it shall be allowed to dry, and patched up with putty for undulations if any, shall be done to make the surface smooth.
9) After drying, 2nd coat of OBD shall be applied.
10) 3rd coat of OBD shall be applied, if specified in work order / by Architect. Thickness of 3rd coat shall be thinner than first two coats.
11) Paint from cans shall be used within 2-3 days.
12) After drying, the surface shall be rubbed off lightly with white/ colored cloth. Paint shall not be removed off the surface.
Oil Paint: Flat
1) Entire process of application is same as that for Oil Bound Distemper.
2) Only two coats of paint are applied. (As a general guideline, 500 ml of thinner shall be added to 1 lit of Oil Paint from can or as per manufacturer’s guidelines to be followed with slight variation in quantity of thinner to obtain paint of desired consistency)
Note: - Thinners (such as mineral turpentine) shall not be added to paints on the feeling that the consistency of the paint supplied by the manufacture is too thick. If the paint has been manufactured to conform to the specification, the paint shall have the correct consistency and shall not require further dilution. If there is any doubt, the viscosity of the paint may be checked. If a slight adjustment of viscosity is necessary, thinner, recommended by the manufacturer shall be used after prior approval.
Oil Paint: Luster
1) Process of application is same as that for Oil Bound Distemper, only difference being a thin base coat consisting of (50 % white oil paint + 50 % primer + thinner) shall be applied over 2nd layer of putty.
2) Two coats of Luster paint are then applied over base coat. (Procedure is same as described in application of OBD).(As a general guideline, 500 ml of thinner shall be added to 1 lit of luster paint from can or as per manufacturer’s guidelines to be followed with slight variation in quantity of thinner to obtain paint of desired consistency.
3) 3rd coat of cluster paint shall be applied, if specified in work order / by Architect and shall be very thin.
Paint on MS / Steel Surfaces:
\1) MS / Steel surfaces shall be cleaned off any rust and scales by rubbing with emery paper (sand paper).
2) The surface shall than be applied with a coat of red oxide.
3) Second coat of red oxide shall be applied over first coat, when 1st coat dries.
4) 1st coat of an oil paint shall then be applied over it, covering the surface evenly. (As a general guideline, 500 ml of thinner shall be added to 1 lit of oil paint from can or as per manufacturer’s guideline to be followed with slight variation in quantity of thinner to obtain paint of desired consistency)
5) 2nd coat of oil paint shall be applied over 1st coat, when 1st coat dries off completely.
Paint on Wooden Surfaces:
Wooden surface shall be painted in the same manner as described for application of oil bond distemper.
Plastic Emulsion Paint/ Plastic Acrylic Paint:
1) Plastic emulsion paint / plastic acrylic paint shall be prepared as per manufacturer’s instructions with slight alterations to obtain paint of required consistency.
2) For an application of plastic emulsion paint / plastic acrylic paint, absolutely smooth surface of plaster is recommended such as Gypsum/POP plaster.
Donga application is not required over gypsum / POP plaster.
Post Paint Procedures:
After application of final coat of paint satisfactorily, stains of paint shall be removed from doors and door frames, tiling, skirting and hand railing, windows including glass panes, M S Grills
, electrical switch boxes etc.
